Previews & Interviews:

Summary:

  • GTA Online will be completely free and will come with GTAV, but won't launch until 1st October.
  • There will be a countdown timer in game to the online launch
  • GTA Online begins with you arriving with no money at all, and you must first complete a few missions to get a feel for the game
  • Reputation Points (RP) will be awarded for completing missions, as you progress through the game you will meet new characters and unlock more missions and rewards etc.
  • There's a lot of property you can buy, at varying prices. You can even use the CCTV to spy on people.
  • You can take out insurance on your vehicles and get a replacement if it gets destroyed.
  • You can hire mechanic to fix all your vehicles automatically.
  • You can hire a private security firm to call in an air strike
  • Your customised vehicles show up as a marker on the map, and will get impounded if you leave them for too long. But you can pay to retrieve them.
  • You will need to deposit your money at the bank as often as possible, because if another player kills you he can steal your wallet.
  • You can call up a friend to hide your blip on the map to make it more difficult for other players to find you
  • Passengers can change the radio station in vehicles
  • You will have contacts that can provide various services, such as hiding you from the map as mentioned above, or setting a bounty on another player.
  • Some vehicle customisation shops might not be willing to change your license plates or respray your car, and instead you'll get a wanted level.
  • Weasel News will report on players who have wanted levels
  • Apartments have planning rooms for organising heists
  • When in a heist, you can invite your friends who will be instantly teleported to your location
  • You can share cash, weapons, ammo among your team
  • Your ranking in GTA Online will be based off your shooting, driving, flying and parachuting skills
  • There's a "passive mode" which allows you to free roam and not be killed by anyone, in turn, you can also not kill other players
  • Bad behaviour, such as blowing up another player, will cause you to get a "Bad Sport" stat. Persistent bad behaviour will result in punishment
  • Matchmaking system is based off ranking, prioritising the ranks of your friends, crew members, and strangers.
  • The game automatically tracks who your rivals are, and will notify you if they come online so you can get revenge.
  • When using a headset, if you speak, your character will broadly lip-sync.
  • In addition, if you rob stores, your crew members will stuff money into bags more quickly if they hear urgency in your voice.
  • The Content Creator allows players to create and share their own missions and activities via the Social Club. Other players can attempt to beat your targets and rate your mission. You'll be able to follow other creators and get a feed of missions they create
  • A Twitter-like "Feed" will be available to relay all your emails, texts and messages from Social Club.
  • The game world will constantly grow and change as new content is added by Rockstar, and at some point GTA Online will head into new locations.
  • Access to Grand Theft Auto Online is free with every retail copy of Grand Theft Auto V and launches on October 1st.

Rockstar's Own Words:

Grand Theft Auto Online is a dynamic and persistent online world for 16 players that begins by sharing gameplay features, geography and mechanics with Grand Theft Auto V, but will continue to expand and evolve after its launch with new content created by Rockstar Games and the Grand Theft Auto community. Grand Theft Auto Online takes the fundamental Grand Theft Auto concepts of freedom, ambient activity and mission-based gameplay and makes them available to multiple players in an incredibly detailed and responsive online world.

In Grand Theft Auto Online, players have the freedom to explore alone or with friends, work cooperatively to complete missions, band together to participate in activities and ambient events, or compete in traditional game modes with the entire community, all with the personality and refined mechanics of Grand Theft Auto V.

Players can invest in their character through customizing their appearance, improving their stats, owning customized vehicles, purchasing personal property, and taking part in missions, jobs and activities to earn reputation and cash to open up new opportunities to rise through the criminal ranks. The world of Grand Theft Auto Online will constantly grow and change as new content is added, creating the first ever persistent and dynamic Grand Theft Auto game world.

Access to Grand Theft Auto Online is free with every retail copy of Grand Theft Auto V and launches on October 1st.

After playing the Last of Us I said that was the most awe-dropping game I have ever played, but GTA V as already eclipsed that for me. Everything about this game is beautiful, from the incredible vistas, to the use of coloring. Now give me that artwork ASAP Rockstar! I need it.

Damn, even I think this looks fun as hell and I rarely have interest in MP in any game. :wtf: I'm most intrigued by this bit I read on Kotaku.

From the company's official description: "Grand Theft Auto Online … begins by sharing gameplay features, geography and mechanics with Grand Theft Auto V, but will continue to expand and evolve after its launch.."

Possibly the inclusion of San Fierro and Las Venturas, and maybe more, at a later date?

And that crew cab truck that was shown in the desert race just became my favorite vehicle in GTA V. I can't wait to customize the shit out of it.

Yeah the idea of R* adding on parts of San Fierro and Las Venturas has been a popular one ever since GTA V was announced. Personally I think that might be a bit too much (technically) for them to add but it will be interesting to see if any other land masses are added, small or large. Again, I can't see that happening, but you never know with R*, it seems anything is possible with them :)

I can hear the Saint's Row 6 dev team crying themselves to sleep. Marvellous.

Though Leslie Benzies has said they are toying with some old material. I really want to see what comes out of this, but unfortunately if they do that I don't think it'll be free. Leslie talked about the chance of small microtransactions.

On the other hand I am absolutely flabbergasted and shocked at the multiplayer. It's extremely dynamic, fun, puts a whole new meaning on "Crews" and multiplayer, and you know what it makes me remember of? Multi Theft Auto.

From CVG

You can buy cars, just like you can (in the real world). Or you can steal them if the mod shops are prepared to dabble with them. If they are, you can spray them and change the plates. If they're not prepared to do that, when the cops spot you in a stolen car, you'll get a Wanted level.

If I remember correctly this was done in Mafia 2, it made for some tense gameplay trying to avoid the detection of the cops. Some people may not like this because it is entirely new to the series, but I feel it will really add a lot to the gameplay. It will give the game that edge, like you are really a criminal and actions have consquences in the game world.

Also

One thing you did confirm was that minigames like tennis were available - does that mean you can play four-player tennis?

That's a good question. Four-player tennis is something we've never even thought about, you know that? Shite. No, tennis is only two-player. Can I write that down?! (Goes off to get a pen and paper.)

Lol

I'm liking the sound of that. Hopefully cops will be more sensitive like they were in Saints Row 2 and will pursue you if you drive recklessly enough and/or knock over fences, light poles, etc.. I'd also like for them to pursue if you run red lights (like in Driver) as well, but that might be a little too much for most people.

Things like races and chases are definitely going to be much more tense and unpredictable, though.

Edit: Am I reading the CVG page correctly, here? You can insure your car? :wtf: Is this going to be the final GTA game or something, because at this point I don't know what they can do down the line for GTA6 to top this...

Yeah makes sense, if I am going to drop a million dollars on a fancy jet I wouldn't be happy if I were to lose that in an unexpected accident or something. ;)

After this I am sure whatever they decide to do will be gold. Perhaps a trip down to Vice City. GTA Online will obviously be apart of their future plans going forward too. That is going to be interesting to see where they go with that. Regular DLC or maybe microtransactions. The latter of which I have no interest in.

That's one thing I always disliked about GTA: saved cars were one-off use only. I'm happy it's changing, because honestly all the "unique" cars I've collected in GTA IV and its Episodes are pretty much just sitting there collecting dust because I don't want to lose them.

I don't mind microtransactions really. It allows me to buy DLC that I want and not get stuff I don't want. For example, say I want that military Patriot with roof-mounted machine gun but don't want the new "Jefferson" town car, know what I mean? But as much as it may pain me to do so, I'll be holding off on DLC for the eventual Game of the Year edition (because let's be honest here, GTA V has pretty much already won GotY  ) that includes everything on disc.

Same here cars for example like the Futo GT which were rare to find, I was always careful of not losing them. So I agree its good they added this in, especially now that the cars will actually be unique with all the customizing.

I guess I just have a sour view on microtransactions, although I understand why people like it. I personally don't want to spend my cash on little things for the game, if it is not in the game when I buy it than I don't need it. Thats one of the reasons I didn't like the Collector's Edition that much.

Well, I wouldn't mind having that Hotknife, but I can understand what you're saying.

I'm wondering about the GTA Online properties. The apartments and shit.. can only one person own them at a time? Or did they not mention that?

Online Multiplayer just in such a diverse setting as Los Santos alone is enough to cause your eyes to water, but add the new mechanics, guns, aircraft, cars, jetskis, boats, etc, etc... (bikes and parachutes!!?) You have the makings of a lot of years left for the two main consoles, and lets hope, of course, PC and laptop gamers in the upcoming year also get to play GTA till the cows come home (RDR3!!)

No I don't believe they did. But I would bet that anyone can own a piece of an apartment or property, with their own unique interior. So the entire apartment itself is not yours, but rather one unit or section. Thats the way I see it.

I like the planes shooting at one another as they fly a check point course, and the oddity of something beyond the normal third person view with new characters and what almost looks like normal gameplay in SP Single Player!!

Another funny observation is the female 3-rd person view going into an apartment with other NPCs dancing and recreating about

What the voice over explains is that we can buy property and invite the MP guests inside, but to just 'chill' and enjoy the surroundings, perhaps give us a pool table or darts in these personal spaces?!? I dunno, it's possible as something to do with live guests in the game.

It might be giving you some male female variety as well as options for buying things more numerous then we've imagined, as they explained with decking yourself out, or your vehicle!!
